Acid Tango (lost in Buenos Aires)

This image is for me intimately tied to what I consider one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Buenos Aires. The image of a couple dressed in a slightly 'retro and anachronistic style in the nocturnal acid lights of a metropolis, it's for me the synthesis of modernity and nostalgia this city represents; I see a little Borges and Goyeneche in it, and of course Bajofondo, Piazzolla and Osvaldo Soriano ..
Maybe also the photography of the movie "Happy Togheter", by one of my favourite filmakers, Wong-Kar-Way, mixed with the warm light and beautiful people of the documentary "Café de los Maestros", about all the old schoolmasters of Tango composition.

This image was intended to be the beginning of a history of tango, but I never finished it, a perfect end in some way since it was about nostalgia and lost things .....

René Magritte e Carmelo Silva

All'età di circa 11-12 anni ho scoperto due pittori che sarebbero stati per me un decisivo punto di riferimento: René Magritte e Carmelo Silva.
Magritte entra a buon titolo in tutte le Storie dell'Arte del XX secolo, per cui parlerò di Carmelo Silva.
Dalle notizie che ho, pare sia nato e vissuto tutta la vita a Treviglio, sull'Adda.
Ho scoperto le sue "disegnate" quando nel 1971 mi capitò in mano una copia dell'Almanacco Illustrato del Calcio di quell'anno: nella parte che riguardava le competizioni internazionali, le azioni importanti e i gol di tutte le partite della Nazionale Italiana erano "disegnate" appunto da Silva, che lavorava anche regolarmente per la Gazzetta dello Sport.
Queste sono proprio due immagini di quell'Almanacco che ho recuperato sul web, sono gli ultimi due gol del celebre Italia - Germania 4-3 del 1970 in Messico.

E' difficile spiegare quale sia stato per me l'impatto di questi disegni: la fluidità del segno, il dinamismo, l'evidente piacere di ricreare e "raccontare" il gesto atletico e tecnico..
per anni mi sono anch'io divertito a disegnare le azioni delle partite che giocavo o che vedevo in TV con questo stile, proprio perchè volevo impadronirmi del segreto di tanta naturalezza.
Tempo fa in occasione del compleanno di un amico giornalista della Gazzetta, che segue appunto il calcio, ho pensato di regalare un acquarello che lo ritraesse in azione sul campo... alla fine, anche senza volere, mi sono reso conto di aver fatto una specie di.. "disegnata".

The bass sound for a jazz lover, it's like blood, the beating heart of music.
Aesthetically, his huge polished wooden body that reflects the lights on stage, the sinuosity of its forms has always fascinated me, togheter with its deep, full sound.
"Always listen to the bass" is the only advice saxophonist Dale Turner (Dexter Gordon) gives to the singer (Lonette McKee in a role that reminds the great Billie Holiday), in 'Round Midnight, the 1986 movie on the life of the great generation of jazz musicians of the 40's-50's by french director Bertrand Tavernier, inspired by the real story of Francis Paudras.
This 100x100 cm painting was part of the exhibition Jazz Rainbow in 2010, side-event on the 50th anniversary of the oldest jazz festivals in Europe,  the Antibes-Juan les Pins Jazz Festival "Jazz à Juan".
In my mind, this image recalls the first bars of the suite A Love Supreme by John Coltrane, a well known piece for all Jazz lovers.

METTERCI LA FACCIA.....

La copertina di un libro è uno dei lavori più stimolanti per un illustratore, vuol dire interagire con un testo, con un editore con un autore, con una idea un'atmosfera... questa copertina è stata la prima nell'ambito dell'attuale collaborazione con l'editore milanese Tranchida.
Mi sono divertito soprattutto ad illustrare il titolo, "Tutta colpa dell'Innocenza", che trovo molto vero, oltre che brillante...

Il libro è opera di Fulvio Fiori, scrittore attore musicista e copywriter, ed è attualmente distribuito nelle maggiori librerie.

Many years ago I found myself for some time in Calabria, deep southern Italy.
One place that struck me most was an ghost industrial area with a huge harbour, half-finished and abandoned. Around there was only nature, the sea front, the sun and the huge flows of useless concrete seemed to me a kind of symbol of human folly, sad but also fascinating and strange.
I often found myself in a place like that in my dreams, and in this painting there is a lot of this experience: an industrial landscape on the shores of the sea, where a few figures move as if on a big stage.... I tried to evocate the exact colors of the dream, little realistic and acids, and the atmosphere of waiting for something, similar to the story of "Desert of the Tartars" by Dino Buzzati.
This is one of my first full digital made paintings​, and has been used as a test for Fine Art Printing by Studio Carraro in Milan, when this technique began to be codified and regulated in the early 2000s: Rino Carraro is a photographer, friend of mine, who had been from the early nineties one of the pioneers of printing Digital Fine Art in Italy.
