Questa è la illustrazione di copertina del libro Ilha do Bananal, che presenta il lavoro realizzato dal 1999 al 2004 dalla ONG Ecologica nell'area dell'isola del Bananal, stato del Tocantins, Brasile.

Si tratta l'isola fluviale più grande del mondo, 22.000 Kmq, sita in un'area di grande interesse ecologico, perchè al centro di tre ecosistemi: quello Amazzonico, quello del Cerrado (savana) e del Pantanal.

L'area è anche una riserva protetta dove vivono due gruppi di nativi, i Carajà e i Javaé  Il libro, edito nel 2004 presso la casa editrice DBA di Sao Paulo e accompagnato da una mostra, venne presentato nel dicembre 2004 alla COP 10 (congresso delle Nazioni Unite sul Cambio Climatico) a Buenos Aires, con il patrocinio del Governo Brasiliano e di Conservation International.

Dovendo realizzare la copertina e altre illustrazioni, e in generale curare la produzione artistica del libro, dell'evento e di tutta la comunicazione collegata, ho passato diversi mesi viaggiando nel centro del Brasile, e la bellezza della natura,, i cieli immensi e sempre diversi e i magnifici colori di quell'esperienza sono entrati per sempre a fare parte di me e della mia opera.

Moving from paper to web...

I just finished a revision of an old Comic Story I made, as part of a series of works I'm going to publish online (eBooks, iOS, Android etc,).

 In 1995 I was invited to an international exhibition organized in the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum in Milan, by the same group of people who later realized the Museum of Comics of Milan, in particular Alberto Ronchi.

The show's title was "The future world, the future of the world", each designer had to develop a theme in a few pages, my theme was "City of Tomorrow."

It was not easy to have a city as the protagonist, so I imagined a story vaguely "noir" in the style of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, with a detective who, instead of walking through the city destroying his shoes on sidewalks, uses all electronic instruments, movement records of credit card, video surveillance, etc.. to search for a missing person, with a surprise ending ... something between Blade Runner and The Big Sleep.

It was almost science fiction, then, it's reality now!

In 2001 I revised the story that was reprinted and, curiously, has become part of the bibliography of a course at the Faculty of Architecture at the Polytechnic of Milan, very unusual for a comic book.

A Simple Case of Better Design

 It used to be the slogan of KATA, Israeli company (of Jerusalem), a world leading producer of bags and covers for professional photography and video.
I lived indirectly the birth and development of Kata as one of the founders was Nitzan Kimchi, that I met in Milan in the early 80's, when he worked in the production of wonderful animated plasticine stop-motion animations. Back to Jerusalem Nitzan, who also had a passion for design, founded Kata-bags with Dror Tischler up to take it to be one of the professional bags industry world leaders. Two years ago Kata was acquired by a financial corporation, but just before Nitzan asked me to create an image campaign for the new line of professional bags.
During the meetings it was clear that the mood they they wanted was the kind of 80s Sci-Fi (including Star Wars and Blade Runner), so I imagined some kind of translucent aliens that have become the 's Avatar symbol of the campaign (who has been at trade fairs such as the NAB of Las Vegas has certainly seen them).

I enjoyed very much working with them.
We also had wonderful moments of nice music thanks to Rali, wife of Nitzan and cellist and composer. For those who want to hear something beautiful and different...

Una mia intervista, in italiano, ad opera della critica d'arte milanese Jacqueline Ceresoli, ne sono molto felice, sia perchè è venuta bene, sia per aver potuto lavorare con Jacqueline, che è una persona che stimo molto.

Queste tre copertine sono state realizzate a poca distanza l'una dall'altra, sono romanzi di tre autori lontanissimi e diversissimi e che scrivono in lingue differenti, ma curiosamente hanno qualcosa in comune: il personaggio principale, o uno dei principali, è un forte personaggio di donna, che vive su un'isola...

Tre isole lontane tra loro: la Martinica, le Canarie e l'isola di Aran... niente di più che una notazione curiosa, ma forse è vero quello che alcuni sostengono, che chi vive su un'isola circondata dall'oceano, e magari anche vulcanica, risente di tutta questa energia?
A proposito di Aran, vorrei qui citare il documentario L'Uomo di Aran, del 1934, che tutti gli appassionati ben conoscono e considerano uno dei capolavori del genere... anche se occorre anche ricordare che questo documentario figura tra le "terrificanti" visioni a cui erano costretti gli impiegati ne Il secondo tragico Fantozzi assieme a Dies Irae di Dreyer e a La corazzata Potëmkin.
